One of the hardest things to teach is how to write, and it gets even harder to teach when you want to teach them to write well and it gets near impossible when you want to teach them to write creatively.
Maybe the answer is digital storytelling.
What is digital story telling?
I won't try to use my own words because tehy will not do aequate justice to this emerging artform and literacy that has been emrging and winning converts in the business and eucational arenas. What I can do for now is to point you to some specific destinations to whet your appetite or satisfy your curiosity.
Well a good place to start would be this Stories1st where 'art and stories come together'. it has a wonderful Flash stories section where some of the stories are absolutley simple yet enthralling and eloquent. It also has an audio interview with Ursulla Le Guin, that matriachal doyen of fiction/fantasy writing.
Another good place to go to is teachstory, where an enthusiastic teacher/student Tom Banaszewski is exploring this fascinating narrative tool and process. The site has simple stories told with movies and even powerpoint presentations using audio, music and images. If we realy want to teach our pupils about media literacy, we may have to move in this direction.
Jason Ohler explores the concept further with his idea of Digital literacy, using technology effectively, creatively and wisely which he explains though his acronym of "DOW"; the literacy blends of "Digital, Oral and Written" literacies.
Visit this site to see how teachers from Kentucky America came up with their own digital stories after a workshop.
Thats about all for now, but more will come I promise as this is an area I personally am exploring and would like to share and work on with my pupils.
